Author’s Journey
How did you get the inspiration for this book?
The inspiration for this heartwarming story, “Tylor’s Authentic Smile,” has been a journey close to my heart for years. As a parent navigating the world of autism alongside my son, I embarked on an unexpected path of learning, advocacy and love that transformed my understanding of parenthood. My role as a parent of a child with autism became a source of deep connection, as I embraced relationships with other autism moms and his service providers. These relationships gave me knowledge, strength, confidence and a sense of community. I became a voice for my son in a way that I never imagined. Each day brought both small and significant accomplishments and setbacks. Like many parents of non-verbal children, I longed for a glimpse into my son’s thoughts and feelings. His genuine, radiant smile became that precious window into his world. I often thought, “there he is!” It was so beautiful.
In the Spring of 2023, my son, Tylor, faced medical challenges that led to hospital stays. I took a leave from work to care for him. During those hospital days and nights, I began writing “Tylor’s Authentic Smile,” and the story began to take shape.
When Tylor was 8 years old, I welcomed my second child, a daughter named Milan. As Milan grew, she quickly embraced our family’s culture of advocacy and support. She embodied compassion from an early age, maturing and learning from both of her parents how to interact with her brother, Tylor, as a guide and protector. We made sure to allow her, her own identity and interests as well. In turn, Tylor opened up to her, becoming a loving and protective big brother in his unique way. The bond between them grew strong and they shared moments of silent companionship that needed no words. Their beautiful relationship, filled with love, compassion and understanding, served as the essence and inspiration for this heartwarming children's story.
